Her Day’s Work is a series of portraits of women in their homes getting ready for work. Photographed through a two-way mirror, the series visibilises the gaze and the space between public and private self.
The series recalls the context of Singapore’s competitive labour force and highly-developed market economy, which thrives on avowed meritocracy. Yet, despite the veneer of social mobility, there are labour sectors which are reliant on the persistence of traditional expectations of how women should appear, speak, and act. Through engaging with workers in industries centred on heteronormative beauty, this series uses portraiture to consider gendered labour and everyday performativity.
